One of the most important Hindu temples in India and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The Kamakhya Temple sits atop the Nilachal Hill and draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year, especially during the Ambubachi Mela in June. Even if you are not religious, the hilltop location offers excellent views of the Brahmaputra River below.

Said to be the world's smallest inhabited river island, Umananda is a tiny forested island in the middle of the Brahmaputra. The short ferry ride itself is an experience, and the Shiva temple on the island is historically significant. Golden langur monkeys are often spotted here.

While technically outside the city, Pobitora is a quick and rewarding half-day trip from Guwahati. This small sanctuary has the highest density of Indian one-horned rhinoceros in the world — making it arguably even better than Kaziranga for rhino sightings in a compact area.
