The Guwahati to Tawang road trip is the kind of journey that stays with you long after you return home. It is raw, it is dramatic, and it takes you through some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in all of India. Covering approx 510 km over two to three days, this road trip passes through the verdant Assam plains, dives into the deep forests of western Arunachal, climbs past ancient Buddhist monasteries at Bomdila, traverses the snow-dusted Sela Pass at approx 4170 m, and finally arrives at Tawang — where the largest monastery in India sits amid clouds and prayer flags.

Travel Tips

  • 1

ILP (Inner Line Permit) is mandatory. Get it done before you leave Guwahati.

  • 2

Budget at least 5–7 days total — 3 days to reach Tawang, 2 days to explore, and 2 days to return or exit via Bomdila.

  • 3

Travel between March–June or September–November for the best road and weather conditions.

  • 4

Do not forget to explore Madhuri Lake near the Indo-China border (requires a special permit from the Tawang army base).

  • 5

The Tawang Monastery is best visited in the morning when the monks are active and the light is golden.

  • 6

Carry enough cash for the entire trip. ATMs are available in Tezpur and Bomdila but are limited and often out of cash in Tawang.
